24 The Psycho-Cultural Shaping of Masculine Jealousy A Lacanian perspective on jealousy For Jacques Lacan (1901–1981), jealousy stems from the ‘mirror phase’ (as explained below), and is underpinned by the desire for the lost object (objet petit a), which is always related to the jealous subject’s own emptiness and lack (Lacan, 1991: 115–16). Lacan suggests that jealousy includes a powerful envious aggression towards the rivalrous third party, who becomes a narcissistic mirror ‘ideal image’ for the jealous subject, and who also appears to possess everything that the jealous subject lacks.

Although this envious relationship does not involve three live people, it does involve a subject and two imaginary objects, and the psychic meanings that become attached to those objects may become displaced on to later jealousy situations. Klein distinguishes between envy, jealousy and greed in the following ways: 30 The Psycho-Cultural Shaping of Masculine Jealousy Envy is the angry feeling that another person possesses and enjoys something desirable – the envious impulse being to take it away or to spoil it … envy implies the subject’s relation to one person only and goes back to the earliest exclusive relation with the mother.

Here, the unconscious desire for the father, and his penis as phantasized as in the phallic mother’s possession, works defensively in denying the phallic mother’s power (Yates, 2000). Phantasies such as these take on a particular relevance in the current psychosocial context of uncertainty where many men feel socially ‘betrayed’ and insecure about the perceived loss of status in relation to women (Faludi, 1999). As Minsky (1996) and others have argued, envious phantasies are regularly projected on to women who are then derided as objects of contempt or who loom large as castrating monsters in the cultural imagination.
