Qualitative methods, however, are particularly flexible, and they have a history in the United States of use for social justice, starting with Du Bois’s work on the Philadelphia survey and the Chicago School of sociology under the leadership of Robert Park (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). Because all this history swirls around committee relationships, having a good relationship with your advisor, particularly, and other committee members is important. The committee’s pedagogical purposes take shape as the dissertation is researched and written.

Some of you may think of making an argument as being argumentative. But it is not. A dissertation argument may be argumentative in the sense that it advocates for a policy or idea or in the sense that it promotes a particular way of looking at things, but it may also take many other forms that we will discuss in this section. But while you may know what your dissertation is about when you are proposing it and collecting data for it, you may not be so clear after you have collected data and are writing about what your argument is.

At the defense, the committee changes its role, somewhat, and becomes an examining committee. For both purposes, then, your committee is the audience for whom the document is written. This chapter addresses these concerns and discusses questions about committee formation, handling relationships with your committee, and working out conflicts—particularly choosing an advisor, working with a committee, power relations, (taking) criticism, conflicts and support, and negotiating differences. We begin with your committee as an audience for your work.
